SBAC Math Test Prep: A Guide for Washington Parents

By the Brana Academy team · Updated

The short answer

Washington students in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10 take the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) math test each spring. It isn’t pass/fail; results come in four levels. The best prep is steady practice on grade-level skills, explaining answers in words, and trying the free practice tests on the Washington State Testing Portal.

What the SBAC math test is

Washington uses the Smarter Balanced Assessment as its state math test. It measures how well students are meeting the Washington K–12 Learning Standards for math at their grade level. According to OSPI, students take it every spring in grades 3 through 8 and in grade 10.

The test is taken on a computer and includes questions where students solve multi-step problems and explain their reasoning, not only pick an answer.

How to read the score levels

Scores are reported in four achievement levels. OSPI describes the test as one indicator of performance, to be considered alongside classwork and other information.

LevelWhat it generally means
Level 4

Advanced grade-level knowledge and skills with deep understanding

Level 3Consistent, proficient grade-level knowledge and skills
Level 2

Foundational grade-level knowledge, with a more limited range of complexity

Level 1Still building the foundational skills for the grade

If your child scored a Level 1 or 2, look at the claim areas on the score report to see which skills need attention. That is more useful than the overall number.

What skills the test checks

Across grades, the math test looks at whether students can:

The reasoning questions are where many students lose points. A child who gets the right answer but can’t explain how often scores lower than expected.

A calm prep plan

  1. Start early. Short, regular practice from winter onward beats cramming in April.

  2. Find the gaps. Use last year’s score report and current homework to spot weak topics, like fractions in grade 5 or linear equations in grade 8.

  3. Practice explaining. Ask “How do you know?” after problems and have your child say or write the steps.

  4. Try the real format. The Washington State Testing Portal has free practice and training tests so students get used to the online tools.

  5. Protect confidence. Keep practice positive, and treat the test as a check-in, not a verdict.
